Report outlining the environmental impact of wine-making in the region

| by | in

Wineries are gearing up for a battle with the Tuscan regional government after it issued a report outlining the environmental impact of wine-making in the region. The document, compiled by experts from the universities of Florence, Pisa and Siena said the use of pesticides and fertilisers impact upon groundwater supplies, and that too many vineyards could lead to soil erosion and landslides. In response key figures from the region defended the industry’s reputation highlighting the tourism benefits and the value of vines, claiming they would hardly be planted with risk of landslides.
